RISE Home Learning Challenge

The RISE Home Learning Challenge Survey is still open and we need the last of the parents to respond.

Please click on the link below to complete the survey.

If your child hasn't participated in the RISE Home Learning Challenge, you can still share any thoughts you have about the programme in the survey.

We have had some specific feedback so far that will help us make the programme better next year, your input will add to this.

You can provide feedback about any aspect of the programme, below is a challenge task checklist that was given out to each participating student. This may help you in providing specific feedback.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Notice in Newsletter Wednesday Oct 24th

RISE HOME LEARNING CHALLENGE EVALUATION SURVEY
As part of our continual planning and evaluation process we are undertaking a survey to gain information about the RISE Home Learning Challenge that has been introduced this year. We would like to hear from all parents, regardless of whether your child participated this year or not. The survey is once again online at the link below. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey so we can improve our programmes that we offer our children. We had a quite disappointing result from the last survey and will be following up with all parents who do not complete the survey before the 7th November. If you would prefer to discuss the RISE Home Learning Challenge with other parents and staff we will be holding a meeting in Kakapo class after the Pasifika Proud programme on Tuesday 6th November from 4:45 - 5:15pm. All parents are welcome to attend this meeting instead of completing the survey online. Whanau who do not have an email address with us or who have elected not to receive emails will be given a paper copy. If you would like a paper copy please see Janet.

All whānau who attend the meeting or complete the survey by the 7th November will go in a prize draw! The children of three randomly selected whānau will get SUBWAY for lunch! Awesome!

Email sent to your Whānau today....

Kia ora Kākāpō parents and whānau,

I hope that this email finds you well and everyone is enjoying their holidays!

Just a few quick reminders before we start back next week. More information will be sent out in the Syndicate newsletter and if you have any other questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.

I have had a great term of studying and have heard that Kakapo had a enjoyable term with Miss Hills! I met with Kath and Charlotte in the holidays for a full debrief, and Kath and I have started to plan an exciting final quarter of 2012. Although I am looking forward to getting back into Kakapo it will have to wait a few more days as i am away for a wedding and wont be back in class until Thursday 18th (Week 1). Jenny Mahony will be in for me for Mon - Weds.

A few reminders:
  • We start off the term with Tech at Hutt Intermediate, students need to wear closed toe shoes for Health and Safety reasons. Tech days this term. Week one - Mon Tues Thurs Fri, Week two - Tues only.
  • Diaries - We are happy with the way that most students have learnt to use their diaries properly. If your child has consistently scored high, then we will not be checking their diary every week, we will only be collecting them all in on Friday of Week 5. We expect the students to maintain their use of their diaries as they have proven that they can monitor their own workload and use a diary to assist managing their time. We will write a note in these diaries so you can tell if your child is required to hand in their diary each week or not. If this is not your child, please remind them daily to check their diary, fill in their reading log and complete other tasks as required. If you wish to communicate with either Kath or me, please ask your child to hand in their diary, regardless of whether they are asked for or not.
  • RISE Challenge- As this was a compulsory part of the homework, students that have not completed enough tasks will be given the opportunity to work on their challenges in weeks 1-4 from 8:15 am every morning for 30-40 minutes. This will happen in class, or in the library if the classroom is not unlocked (due to staff meetings). Students are encouraged to seek help to ensure that every student completes the required amount of challenges.
  • All students need to be ready for school and sitting in their seats prior to the bell - ideally this means 8:50 at the latest. Before school, students are encouraged to get on with existing work, and take their initiative where possible.
  •  A brief reminder about PE gear, Students need to bring PE gear on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. NRL league shorts are not part of the school PE Uniform, even if they are the shorts of the champions of the 2012 Premiership...!
  • Homework reminder - Please ensure that your child is completing their homework each week - this includes at least 1/2 hour reading each night and their maths homework. Homework will continue throughout the term except for EOTC week (week 7) and the final week of the year.
  • We have been endeavoring throughout the year to contact parents regarding their child's positive behavior and work standards. We will continue to do so, and will be also beginning to text these messages home, please make sure you let one of us know if your cell phone changes or if you prefer verbal rather than text feedback.
  • Some students may need extra stationery, as it is that time of the year when things are running out - please ask your child if they need anything at school.

After getting started - there actually turned out to be quite a few things to be remembered! Hopefully some or all have been of help.

Finally - Thanks to Kath for taking over the full time role in my absence. Having Kath in class allowed me to have full confidence that things would be done thoroughly and I could relax focus, on my study!

I look forward to catching up with all of you at some point or another over the next nine weeks. We have lots to keep us busy, especially the Year 8's who have the end of year prizegiving to prepare for, leavers lunch and leaders dinner!

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to get in touch

Ma te wa! Bye for now!

Chris   (and also on behalf of Kath)

A great surprise!

Last Saturday I got a great surprise in the mail!
A wonderful red book - full of inspiration and advice from the Kākāpō students to keep me on track with my study!
With only a few weeks left until I return to the class and have less time to complete my study the book provides a much needed boost in motivation!
Thanks very much Ms D & Kākāpō!

Kia ora Kakapo,

World Class Athlete.... Sophie Pascoe

Kia Ora,
Who has heard of Sophie Pascoe? Hopefully you have had a chance to see her in the news over the past few days of the Paralympics, I doubt whether any Kakapo students will remember her from the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.

In Beijing Sophie was just 15 and won three Gold and one Silver medal!

That's pretty amazing! Already in London she has made a great start and won two gold and one silver.

If you havent heard of her - it is possibly because the Paralympics have had very little coverage in the news media.
Do you think that this is fair?
Compared to the constant exposure of the Olympics the Paralympics have had almost zero media time.

Here is a quick clip so you can learn a bit about Sophie and what it takes to succeed at the highest level in the world.

Athlete comparisons....

Here is a website that shows you comparisons between today's athletes and their predecessors...

It is a New York Times (The New York Daily Paper) website and is quite biased in favour of America -
They have chosen three sports that the United States has been dominant in; they havent chosen Shot Put or Discus as Americans dont have as a good a record in those events. It is an American paper though - so they should be allowed to try and appeal to their audience. Or should they?

Here is a video taken from the site that shows how the Athletes would compare:

Make a decision

Here is a quick video about MAKING A DECISION and STICKING TO IT. You may be only 11, 12, 13 but you can develop the habit of making a decision and sticking to it!
Table points up for grabs:
This clip has some big ideas and tricky words - find one word or idea that you dont understand and write it in the comments (20 points per person that comments with a question).
Then try and answer someone's question - (50 points per person that comments with a question)

New Zealand Author Margaret Mahy passed away today. She was both a great author and a great New Zealander....

Writing Lessons from Margaret Mahy

2006 Hans Christian Anderson award winner, Margaret Mahy, has the following sound advice to aspiring writers:
Be Persistent! Work Hard! Be Tough! And Read! Read! Read!

If anyone knows about hard work and persistence, it is New Zealand children's writer Margaret Mahy.
How did she go about learning the craft, and what advice does she have for new writers of children's books?

Learn the Craft of Writing
 “Most authors teach themselves to write the sort of stories they want to write,’ she says in an interview with Christchurch City Libraries. “It can be useful to go on courses, or to weekend schools, but mostly writers learn by writing stories, making mistakes, recognising what the mistakes are and never making them again.”
Her first published story appeared in the School Journal, published by the New Zealand Education Department for free distribution in schools.

Work Hard

A single mother, she worked for many years for the Schools Library Service in New Zealand. Supremely disciplined, Mahy wrote relentlessly, late at night after her children were in bed. She was famous for being so tired that she fell asleep standing up, and more alarmingly, while driving home after work.
“I love being a writer,” she says, “but I do think I work very hard at what I do, so don't think of being a writer if you imagine it is an easy way of making a living.”

Be Tough

“You need to be tough, because most writers get stories turned down, particularly in the beginning, and you must not let yourself become too discouraged.”
Through these early years Mahy lived in a very simple house overlooking the sea, with very few mod cons. Part of her success can be put down to the fact that she did not try to publish too early, but wrote until she had developed her voice into something entirely unique.

Be Persistent

"Be persistent," advises Mahy. She wrote continuously for fifteen years before an American publishing house found one of her stories in the journal, and wrote to ask if she had any more. She had a trunk filled with over a hundred, and they bought every one. Her first commercially published book, ‘The Lion in the Meadow’ was an instant success, and is still selling today.

Read Read Read

“I do know writers who don't read much, partly because they are frightened of somehow copying stories they are currently reading. However, I think most true writers are so interested in their own ideas they can't be bothered copying anyone else's, so personally, I think reading lots and lots of books is always a good thing," she says.

Parents with Degrees

We have a new programme starting in Kakapo - its called Parents with Degrees. We will be inviting a range of parents into class to talk about the choices that they made regarding their tertiary study.

We are very excited to learn about everyone's different choices.

A whole programme is being run that sees a different desk group run the session each week, this includes writing a letter to invite the guest, following up with a phone call, introducing the guest properly and also undertaking an interview. The outputs of each session will be shared with a wider audience through a small video and a one page bio.

The first week was a bit of a trial - as such we had Mr Theobald as our first guest - Here is the Video:

Student jailed for racist remarks

When you get the chance - read the article on the Yahoo website about English Premier League Footballer Fabrice Muamba here.

Then answer one of the following questions:

What can we learn from this in relation to
  • Hurtful remarks about others
  • Social media (facebook, twitter etc)
  • Our RISE Values?
 Try and make a comment by Wednesday 4th April

How clean is 'Our Place'?

Here is a short video about "Moose" who cleans as a form of graffiti -

What do you think? - Do we seen the hidden dirt in our own community? What messages could we spread about the change in 'Our Place'  over the past 200 years?

Did Te Puni see the dirt in his day walking in his Pito-One? Or is the dirt within which we live the filth of modern society?

2011 Year 8 legacy item....

This mural was designed by the 2011 year 8 students.
Mr Tavite helped to transform their ideas from an a4 piece of paper onto a large piece of ply.
A selection of students went to mitre ten and chose the colours before
all of the students helped to paint the design at the end of last year.
Mrs Whalen helped to tidy up the borders this year before Mr Jago put it up on the wall yesterday.

A huge Thank You to everyone involved - a great team effort! It looks great in our playground.

Hank the Shark

Here is a video of a song that has been made into a children's book - Hank the Wrestling Shark. The author is a friend of mine - Gerry Paul - he is a musician who has travelled around the world for the past twelve years playing in several bands including Grada and Two Oceans Trio.

A very accomplished musician - this is his first time writing a book.

You cant see the book as yet - it isnt released until our own book week. However, we can listen to this song and we will have the book in later in the term. Hopefully Gerry might come in to talk to us as well to explain how he came to write this book.

Books can come in all shapes and sizes, for all ages and interests - Lets see if kakapo kids can list all of their favourite books in the comments section of this post....

Happy pre book week weekend....

All Over Red Rover

As the dust settles on an eventful week in Nelson, the Kākāpō students will be looking back on an exciting week with many fears conquered and challenges faced. It was a great week that was 'non-stop' from go to wo. All students and adults seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves and we will be sharing some of that enjoyment on the Kākāpō 2012 blogsite over the next two weeks.
A huge THANK YOU is owed to many... I will endeavour to list the various groups and people who helped make this camp possible and enjoyable:
  • Vai Lui and Judy Campion organised and applied for grant board funding respectively;
  • Hutt Mana Charitable Trust;
  • Pelorus Trust;
  • Pub Charity;
  • Angela Coffey and Vanessa Tavite for assisting with fundraising organisation;
  • All parents who ran or assisted fundraising events from Balloon Buddies to Lotto raffles to Harry Potter and everything in between;
  • Parents who were able to join us on camp - Brent Pritchard, Keith Stevens, Jason Pahina, Angela Cameron and Cath Fitzgerald;
  • Paul, Carey and Alisha from Teapot Valley Christian Camp - who ran a fantastic camp;
  • Henry from the Interislander who looked after us to and from Picton;
  • Keith the Bus Driver;
  • Smitty and the creww from the Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle;
  • All parents who gave their children everything they needed for camp (including the Camp Fee!), and the love and preayers to bring everyone home safely; and finally...
  • All the Kākāpō students who took up the challenge to GO BEYOND in every possible way on camp.
We will be working on our camp books for a few weeks and will invite parents to share our camp experiences with us in due course.

Until then...
