How bad do you want to Achieve Success?

This is the last post for 2011 -
Here is a video clip that talks about desire and determination. It is overly 'Americanised' and a little too focused on American Football but the key message is a good one.   How bad do you want to achieve success? What ever your goals are - make them your focus - be prepared to work hard for them.

A couple of caveats (warnings):
You need sleep - especially as children/teenagers - Without enough sleep your body cant function and you will not be able to work hard the following day to achieve success. Sleep is important.

You also need to have goals in various aspects of your life. Dont have one sole focus, have various and have a back up plan.

Merry Christmas Kakapo, have a good break and restful summer!

Survey about School:Home Communication

As part of our 2011 goal to improve communication with our parents/whānau we are conducting a survey looking at the ways in which we can best communicate to you. The survey is very brief and quite straightforward.
There are several ways to complete the survey – you can go to
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MR8KCDNor you can complete it in paper form. Families that have not completed the survey online will be automatically sent a paper survey next Wednesday 30th Nov. (or you can get one from the office from tomorrow).
The link to the online survey can also be found on the school website. We are also setting up a computer in the foyer of the office to allow people to complete the survey at school if they wish.

We are determined to get 100% feedback from whānau so expect a friendly phone call if you haven’t filled the survey in online or returned a completed paper survey by the 7th Dec.

Thank you very much in anticipation of your help – Any questions please see Liz or Chris.

Brain Power

See if you can get the most information about these staggering human abilities by understanding the following words:
Savant is a rare condition in which people with developmental disorders have one or more areas of supreme expertise
Pi: (some of you may know this)  is a mathematical number (3.1415.....) that can be used to find the edge (circumference) of a circle. The number of decimal points is continuous
Binary Numbers Our counting system uses a base of ten (ten symbols for numbers and then we use a separate column. A binary system uses two symbols for number I, 0. This system is used a lot in computers.
Epilepsy  is a brain disorder involving repeated, spontaneous seizures of any type. Seizures ("fits," convulsions) are episodes of disturbed brain function that cause changes in attention or behavior
See if you can find out what a petaflop is....

I will give you a test on some of these facts later in the week!

Leadership Behaviour?

This video is of the Czech Republic president stealing a pen at an official signing of an agreement between the Czech Republic and Chile. The story caused a stir in the Czech Republic. Czech television broadcast the video with red circles and arrows highlighting the pen. A spokesman for President Klaus on Tuesday dismissed the media storm caused by the video, saying the pen was "a common pen with a logo of the state or office, which presidents and members of their delegation receive during state visits". In fact, the pens are encrusted with semi-precious stones.
The 'theft' of the pen is questionable as officials said that the President and his guests were free to take the pen. See if you can answer one of the following questions......
Do you think this should be making the news?
Does the way that the President takes the pen make him seem like a trustworthy person?
What would you think if John Key behaved in this way?
How could we learn a lesson about the way that we behave in class / school?
Is the leader being a good role model?
(or you can share any other thoughts you may have about the clip)

Hunting video clips

After much deliberation we have finally finished our "Deciding" phase of our I'm a Survivor inquiry unit. Our chosen questions are:
What are common hunting techniques used by predators?
and
What are some common defense techniques used by prey?
Here are some clips that can be viewed anytime to get you thinking about techniques that are used..... Kakapo - Try and watch these before Wednesday, (you can watch them in class, before school or in any free time)
(caution - hunting is good for the predator, but not great for the prey so there are some "yucky" scenes)

The Cuttle Fish...... WOW!

We are in our DECIDING phase of our Inquiry unit, we are deciding what we will look at for the next eight weeks. We have looked at the achievement objectives from the New Zealand Curriculum, we have discussed what contexts we may wish to learn about (various animals), we are now trying to look at what are some unique characteristics of animal groups that we could learn about. In class we have discussed
How animals fly,
How animals hunt,
and many more.......
The following link looks at another pretty special characteristic; maybe we could look at animals that are special in this way.

Follow the link to learn about a pretty special animal.

Frosty Man and the BMX Kid........

This is an interesting short film that was made for a competition run by Tourism New Zealand.
Homework for Kakapo for Week 8 is to answer one of the three questions below in the 'comments' section. Each answer should start off with the number of the question and the words "I think...". Share your opinion.

1. Why would Tourism New Zealand run a short film competition?
2. Why does the old man refer to the place as "his Eden"?
3. What would you make a short film about if you were entering this competition?

This is the extended and enhanced version of FROSTY MAN AND THE BMX KID which was written and directed by Tim McLachlan – one of the five finalists in the international YOUR BIG BREAK film-making competition run by Tourism New Zealand in conjunction with Barrie Osborne (The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings) and Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings, King Kong).

Something special happens at Heathrow Airport in London

Check out this clip, a mobile phone company "T Mobile" planned this flash mob at Heathrow Airport on unsuspecting travellers as they unboarded the plane and came through the arrivals gate. It would be pretty special coming home to this, or arriving in a country and recieving this welcome!

Inspirational?

This week part of Kakapo's homework is to post a comment on one of our blogs. Hopefully this video will help by providing ideas for all students to write about.  Are there any parents looking at our blog that could leave a comment also?
This video is about a true life hero who teaches all of us a lesson about priorities, love and dedication. It inspires me to be a better me, to TAKE A STEP in a small way each day toward an improved self. What are your thoughts on Team Hoyt? It is not comical like some of our other posts and a little longer, watch the whole clip and try to leave a comment.

FLASH MOB

A flash mob (or flashmob) is a term coined in 2003 to denote a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and sometimes seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment.

check this out.....

Could Kakapo organise our own flash mob in the playground?

Magical words from Snr Constable Blue

In relation to drug users who think that giving up an addiction is too hard:
"People who say things are too hard are basically saying they, themselves, are too soft"
What are your thoughts?

Tuesday, 22 February 2011

Leadership is important but not everyone needs to lead all the time.

Since birth, you have all been told that you are unique and special, which is true.
What can get confused is that people have the same expectation of uniqueness and feeling special in regard to to being the best and taking a lead role in each activity that they do. Sometimes you can be unique and special by being part of the crowd, by being a follower. Leadership is important, but as this video tries to show, being a "first follower" is also a key role. Being a second and third follower is also important.
What are your thoughts? Take a moment to add a comment below if you can.

Kakapo - Take a Step Challenge 2011

Sorry about the poor Quality. You may need to turn the sound up.
Our school Camera Club will look at improving the videos and photos that we take.

Kakapo 2011

Although it seems that the start of the school year was only yesterday, the students in Kakapo have already achieved a lot.

Our writing self assessment has started well and we learning how to become more critical of what we write.

The behaviour and work expectations are a step up from year 6 and the new Year 7's are slowly starting to adjust! Well done guys.

This is my first attempt at a blog, i am hoping that i will be able to share some needed information (homework, trip dates, sports events info) and also some exciting links to information that i have found on the Web.

I also hope that parents will be able to stay informed with what their children are up to in class, through student examples, photos, scans of work and perhaps videos of school events. By having strong relationships between home and school we will be able to achieve the best possible outcomes for each student.

If you have any questions relating to anything posted in the Blog, please feel free to email, phone the school or come into class and see me.

Fa'afetai
